just as good as Mr. Bento from ZojirushiNov 28, 2006

I got this thermal lunch jar tote as a Christmas gift last year. I have to say, that after testing it for almost 1 year, it has really paid off!! I prefer hot lunches and food stays HOT !!! You have to preheat all the containers by filling it with boiling water, and the jar itself with boiling water. Close all lids. It should preheat for at least 10 minutes. I usually take 15 - 20 minutes making my lunch, so the soup/stew, rice, vegetables etc. are all piping hot. Then I dump all the water, dry the containers, and start filling them, and stacking them in the correct order.
With preheating, my food stays HOT. Many times this year, I didn't get to eat lunch until 2:30 or 3pm. The food was definitely hot (still had steam coming out of it). The very top container, is not steaming hot, but is warm (which means it's perfect for fruit or veggies or snacks). The other 3 containers are hot.
I find this comparable to Mr. Bento from Zojirushi. And they both hold about the same amount of food. The difference?
Mr. Bento comes with chopsticks and a large lunch sak to carry the thermos lunch. The Nissan Stainless lunch tote comes with a spoon in the holder, and it has carrying straps, but no lunch sak to put in as a carrier. Sometimes having a lunch sak to carry it is nice.
I found one of those draw string backpack at Target for $3, and it works really nicely as a lunch bag. It fits the Nissan Thermos wide mouth lunch tote, an extra set of chopsticks, napkins, and another small ziploc container of fruit for dessert.
I do not recommend dairy products. You may get food poisoning by packing dairy items, and spoiled dairy smell is always hard to get out of plastic containers.
All in all, 5 stars! I'm so happy I have 2 sets of lunch jar totes!

LOVE this bentoMar 23, 2007

Well, I have had this Nissan bento for over 5 years now. And as an adult, I have to say that I have no problems with it keeping food hot. I find that it is VERY COMPARABLE, even BETTER than the Zojirushi Mr. Bento. I like my food HOT, and being entirely stainless steel, it keeps all 4 containers hotter than the Mr. Bento. The top 2 containers in Mr. Bento tend to be cool (room temperature) after 4 hours or more, while in the Nissan, they are usually more than warm (but not steaming).
To make sure I am comparing correctly, I preheat the 4 containers with hot water before I pack, just like Mr. Bento.
Also, the construction of this bento is much more sturdier than Mr. Bento, which has a lot of plastic. Like the other reviewer, yes it will dent if it gets banged around. As an adult, I don't have any problem with it.
Also the Mr. Bento I got from Amazon in Xmas 2006, was made in Thailand, not Japan. Apparently it is too expensive to get it from Japan now or something like that.
My girl friend's Mr. Bento was made in Japan, and it was much sturdier, and kept food hotter. I think the new Mr. Bentos have a plastic lid, which allows heat to escape.
Anyway, I just sold the Mr. Bento on ebay, and kept the lunch bag, which fits the Nissan Thermos really well.
I love this Nissan Thermos lunch tote. It really is worth the money.

LUNCH TOTENov 13, 2006
By AM My 11 year old son loves this lunch tote. He likes soup and hot foods for lunch and this tote keeps food hot. The separate containers are good for a variety of foods, hot and cold.I thought of getting this for my 7 and 5 year olds, but the top is too wide for them to unscrew. The only downfall is being stainless it dents and my son is very active with his backpack he puts it into, and the outside of the tote has gotten a few dents in it. None of the dents has affected the inside area.

Acceptable Trucker's SolutionJan 15, 2010
By Ronnie Lee Ellis I was searching for on-the-road meal solutions for my husband, who is a medium-distance trucker and drives a small 5-tonne truck. I had tried 'ordinary' bento lunches before, but due to the distances he drives and the small size of his truck cab, we ran into serious food safety and storage safety issues. While looking for information on the Zojirushi Mr. Bento, I discovered the Thermos Nissan lunch tote. I chose the Thermos Nissan over the more popular Mr. Bento for the following reasons: 1) An independent site compared both bento jars and found them to be comparable in performance, with the Thermos Nissan coming out just a little bit ahead in temperature retention. With the issue of time before he can stop to eat, every little bit of food safety helps. 2) The stainless steel jacket is resistant to the knocks and bumps it takes in a truck cab. 3) The Thermos Nissan is very compact, with a carrying strap rather than the canvas bag of the Mr. Bento. The truck cab is tiny and having many items in the cab poses a safety issue; the Thermos Nissan fits into the gym bag that he already takes with him, so he doesn't have to bring yet another bag. 4) Price. During the time it takes for a driver to sign in at his destination and talk to the product receiver, thieves can pop out the locks on his truck's doors and remove bags, jackets and anything else that might contain sellable items. The Thermos Nissan won't be as expensive to replace, should it be stolen. How does he like it? The Thermos Nissan has been performing acceptably. Typically it's about six hours until he gets a chance to eat; the food within the Thermos Nissan, although not hot, is still on the hot side of warm, enough to be delicious. We have found that the rice container keeps foods like french fries, chicken strips and popcorn shrimp from getting too soggy. His titanium spork fits into the spoon carrier, so the Thermos Nissan has unexpected geek appeal. The Thermos Nissan does not come with detailed instructions for how to use it. I strongly suggest looking at tips for using a Mr. Bento, as they apply to the Thermos Nissan as well and will get the best performance from it. Prepared properly, the Thermos Nissan has given him hot, healthy meals on the coldest -40C nights. Two thumbs up!

Great thermo for a bargain priceOct 29, 2009
By Review Convincer Just like any thermos you would fill the container with hot tap water and let it sit for 10-20 minutes before using. However for optimal results, I recommend using boiling water to let it warm up the steel thermos and set the 4 mini container in hot tap water. With these method , the result was exceptional good, the food stayed HOT for 6-7 hour, then warm after.
How much each container will hold?
Starting with the biggest, the 3rd container holds about 1 and 1/2 cups of water. The con about the container is that it is not leak proof, so storing liquid food is out of the option for the biggest one, however 1 and 1/2 cup of rice is just enough to satisfy your appetite. It can fit about 2 drops/rolls of cooked noodle, or pasta. The soup and sauce can be filled from other separate containers
The 4th container in the bottom hold about 1 full cup of water, this container is bottle cap screw tight, so liquid can be used. There is a little blue tip that you can press to release the air out before opening. Since I'm an avid fan of Chinese cabbage (Bok Choy), it can fit 3 big pieces of these undismantled to demonstrate how much it can hold.
The 2nd container holds about 3/4 cup of water, it is a snap on lid like most plastic containers, the snap on lid are tight and liquid is workable with these container. But it is not recommended to be to filled fully. I used this container for storing meat or vegetable or sea food. If I bring noodles that is stored on the 4th container, this container will usually hold some soup to pour in my noodle.
The 1st container holds about 1/2 cup of water, Since this container is sitting in close and outmost to the steel lid of the container, it is likely to be cooled first, so storing warm food is not recommended with this one. Fruits and cool/cold treats may be ideal with this one.
The spoon holder is snapped on in the bottom of the thermos.
This steel thermos can hold more than enough for a full meal. Other than that, I need to purchase a smaller set of chops stick to fit inside the spoon holder.
